Late fall is the best time to do a large-scale lawn makeover:
- Little to no watering is needed. The grass quickly goes dormant, and then the snowmelt and spring rains do all the watering for you.
- There is less outdoor activity going on, so keeping off the grass for the required several weeks is easier to do.
- This is the best way to “go organic” because we pump up the soil ecology and soil texture that makes long term organic care successful.
How do you know if you need a lawn makeover? Take a peek outside and see if you recognize any of these characters:
Weedy—
This lawn is green, but mostly a mashup of plants with names like “Creeping Charlie”, “Hairy Bittercress” and “Crabgrass”. You’re pretty sure there is very little “grass” out there.
Patchy—
This lawn has more “grass” in it but looks like a serious skin condition. You’re probably wondering “where did the grass go???”
Lumpy—
This lawn is green and looks ok from afar, but run across it and you’re likely to break an ankle.
Or just plain Unhappy with what you’re looking at!
Depending on the lawn size, typical makeovers run between $1.90 and $2.20 per square foot.
